Art in Action: The Powder Cloud Bench at MOLLIE Aspen
Aspen, a world-renowned destination, is defined by its stunning natural beauty, active lifestyle, and rich cultural heritage shaped from its deep-rooted history. This once small, silver-mining town underwent remarkable transformation in the late 1940s, driven by the vision of innovative residents like Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. Their “Aspen Idea” – a philosophy emphasizing the renewal of mind, body, and spirit – inspired a cultural and intellectual renaissance that continues to shape Aspen today.
Fittingly, an art piece inspired by the Aspen Idea graces the space outside MOLLIE Aspen, directly facing Paepcke Park. This unique piece seamlessly blends art and function, serving as both a striking visual element and a comfortable bench for locals and visitors to enjoy. Its presence subtly invites contemplation and connection to the very essence of Aspen.
The bench mimics the formation of powder clouds that often blanket Aspen Mountain on snowy days and was designed in partnership with both landscape architecture and design firm, Aceto Landscape Architects, based in Portland, Maine, and fabrication studio, Raw Creative located in Denver.
The “Powder Cloud Bench” is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, composed of numerous precisely cut wooden pieces seamlessly integrated into a single, cohesive form. Drawing inspiration from MOLLIE Aspen’s interior design, the bench extends the hotel’s warm and inviting ambiance outdoors, creating a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
Just as Aspen underwent a transformation to embody the ideals of mind, body, and spirit, this artful bench has subtly transformed the corner of Main Street and Garmisch Street. It invites visitors to pause, to be present in the moment, and to fully experience the surrounding beauty of Aspen Mountain, Paepcke Park, and Smuggler Mountain.
