Step Back in Time
Ashcroft Ghost Town – Castle Creek Road
Ten miles south of Aspen, Ashcroft features several historic ruins and homesteads. Originally home to the Ute people, who used the valley for summer hunting and foraging, the town was founded in 1880, when two Leadville miners left in search of silver in the Castle Creek Valley. By 1912 Ashcroft had been abandoned to a ghost town. Enjoy a picnic among spectacular alpine meadows and explore the restored remains of several historical buildings, including a saloon, post office, and hotel.

Not Quite Spelunking
The Grottos Ice Cave – Highway 82
Situated nine miles east of downtown Aspen, up Highway 82 (towards Independence Pass), explore an ambling path of cascading waterfalls and grottos. Turn off the highway once you reach the Grottos Day Use Area. This area is lovingly maintained by the National Forest Service. Dogs permitted on leashes and picnic tables available to enjoy a packed lunch!

A Day at the Beach
The Beach at North Star Preserve – Highway 82
Located between Highway 82 and the eastern side of Aspen Mountain, the North Star Preserve encompasses a stretch of the Roaring Fork River, wetlands, and significant wildlife habitat totaling 245 acres. The beach flanks a spectacular bend of river available to relax, watch paddle boards float by, and spot some local moose! Parking is only allowed in designated areas. Dogs are not allowed and the Preserve is open from dawn to dusk. Bringing towels and a picnic is highly encouraged, as well as swimwear for taking a cool dip in the river.
