A Guide to Aspen Activities in Spring

With year-round outdoor activities available, there is always something enjoyable to do while visiting Aspen, and Spring is no exception. As the town slows down between peak seasons, visitors can enjoy Aspen with fewer crowds at a slower pace. Here is a guide to some of the best things to do in Aspen during April and May.

Biking

E-Bikes

Rent an e-bike and cruise along the scenic Rio Grande Trail along the Roaring Fork River offering views of Aspen, Snowmass and Woody Creek. A popular route is a leisurely ride down to Woody Creek Tavern, a local favorite that typically takes around 1.5 hours round-trip.

Sightseeing

Maroon Bells

One of the most iconic landscapes in Colorado, Maroon Bells is a must-see when visiting Aspen and reopens on May 15 and is accessible to visitors via car or shuttle services. There are benches at the viewpoint for sitting, or you can add some exercise with a moderate-level hike to Crater Lake.

Independence Pass

Typically opening in late May (although sometimes it can open earlier depending on the conditions), Independence Pass offers one of Colorado’s most breathtaking mountain drives. Driving your way up the windy pass you’ll find alpine views and scenic outlooks.

Fly Fishing

Aspen Outfitting Company

As the snow has melted into the rivers and the temperatures are warmer, it is a great time to book a fly fishing excursion and spend the day casting along the Frying Pan. They provide the necessary gear, transportation and even beer for a relaxing day on the water.

Hiking

Smuggler Trail

One of Aspen’s most popular hikes, Smuggler Trail is about 1.5 miles one way with roughly 800 feet of elevation gain. The gradual ascent makes it a moderate hike, and the overlook at the top offers panoramic views of Aspen Mountain and downtown.

Sunnyside Trail

Located just outside of downtown Aspen, Sunnyside Trail is a beautiful intermediate-level climb. While it stretches beyond 10 miles, most hikers choose to hike to the Radio Tower, about 2.4 miles one way. The trail gets plenty of sun, making it an ideal option during shoulder season, and the reward along the way are gorgeous views of Buttermilk, Highlands and Ajax.

Relax

Roof Terrace Spa Pool

After a day of activities, unwind in the spa pool at MOLLIE Aspen. Soak while taking in mountain views, and pair the experience with a drink from the Roof Terrace Bar, open Thursday – Sunday, 3 – 5 PM.

O2 Aspen

For a deeper level of relaxation, book a facial or massage at O2 Aspen, one of Aspen’s beloved wellness studios.
