Favorite Fall Activities in Aspen

Fall is a cherished season in Aspen, made even more special by the fact that its peak only lasts a few short weeks. It’s a time for crisp mountain air, cozy sweaters and warm cider, with the landscape transforming into a sea of golden, yellow and red leaves. From scenic drives and outdoor adventures to seasonal festivals, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Aspen at its most colorful.

If you’re visiting Aspen this fall, here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy the season outdoors.

SNOWMASS BALLOON FESTIVAL

Taking place September 25 – 27, the Snowmass Balloon Festival is a favorite fall tradition. Head to Snowmass to watch colorful balloons fill the sky on Saturday and Sunday, with a night glow on Friday evening. It’s a fun way to spend a fall weekend with a companion or your family.

BIKE RIDING

If you’re looking for more of a challenge, head to the Snowmass Bike Park for downhill mountain biking. For a more leisurely ride, rent an e-bike and cruise around Aspen on the Rio Grande Trail, up to Maroon Bells or up the Castle Creek Valley.

EXPLORE ASHCROFT

Perched at the end of Castle Creek Road, Ashcroft Ghost Town offers a glimpse into Aspen’s mining history. Take a self-guided tour through the restored historic buildings and learn more about the area’s past, all surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.

LEAF PEEPING

Experience fall without leaving your car. Take a scenic drive along Castle Creek Road or McLain Flats, or venture a little farther out to Independence Pass, for some of the best fall scenery around Aspen.

Just be sure to check road conditions before you go, especially later in the season.

FALL FEST AT ELK CAMP

On the weekend of October 3 – 4, spend a day at Elk Camp on Snowmass Mountain to experience Fall Fest. Take the gondola up the mountain and enjoy live music, kids’ face painting, caramel apple stations, drink specials, a pumpkin patch, and contests with giveaways.

It’s the perfect fall activity for the whole family. Sightseeing tickets are required, and kids 12 and under ride the Elk Camp Gondola free.

HIKING

Fall is one of our favorite times to hit the trails. The cooler temperatures make for more comfortable hiking, and the changing leaves add even more color the views. Some of our favorite hikes for leaf peeping are Smuggler Mountain, Sunny Side Trail, Rim Trail South, and American Lake Trail.

As the season gets later, be sure to check trail conditions before heading out, as snow can arrive early at higher elevations.

GONDOLA RIDING

You don’t have to hike in order to enjoy the views from high elevation. Take the Silver Queen Gondola up Aspen Mountain or the Elk Camp Gondola up Snowmass Mountain to see the fall colors with panoramic views. Both gondolas are open on weekends: Sept. 11-13, 18-20, 25-27, and Oct. 2-4, 2026.

Once you reach the top, take some time to explore, enjoy the views and grab lunch at one of the mountain restaurants.
